MACHOS, MACHETES Y MIGRANTES: MASCULINIDADES Y DIALÉCTICAS DEL CONTROL LABORAL EN GUATEMALA

Resumen
Este artículo examina cómo los procesos de «estabilización» entre los trabajadores migrantes indígenas en Guatemala están siendo construidos y enfrentados. Presento el caso de las plantaciones de azúcar en Guatemala, cuyos programas de «modernización» laboral han sido alardeados por el Banco Mundial y otras instituciones internacionales como un modelo para el resto de Centroamérica. Este trabajo demuestra cómo los intentos de lograr una estabilización de la fuerza laboral agrícola a través de la masculinización del trabajo, paradójicamente han acelerado los procesos de la migración internacional en las áreas rurales de Guatemala. El tema del «gobierno» de los mercados laborales ha emergido como una cuestión clave dentro de los debates desarrollistas en la etapa de la pos-guerra en Centroamérica. En algunos aspectos, se trata del reemergimiento de la problemática Liberal clásica de cómo formar una fuerza de trabajo disciplinada y productiva sin provocar cambios sustantivos a la estructura existente de acumulación de capital y poder. El trabajo que aquí se presenta se basa en los debates recientes dentro de la geografía humana crítica para argumentar por la necesidad de tomar en cuenta una noción más amplia de las políticas de producción, que tome en cuenta las formas en que los trabajadores están situados dentro de esferas sociales y culturales cada vez más internacionalizados. Los esfuerzos de la élite nacional por «fijar» una identidad de género en sus trabajadores como una manera de inducir la estabilización laboral, puede tener consecuencias desprovistas a causa de estas dinámicas dialéticas de la producción de la identidad social, las cuales constituyen un desafío a las nuevas normas de «trabajador-ciudadano» que las élites azucareras desean inculcar.
